Macsteel – M City

Full renovation of abandoned space

SA Office Interiors in collaboration with Mac Steel recently completed a full renovation of the old Robor facility on Barbar Road Elandsfontein. The Facility that stetches over 200 000sqm of warehousing and office space was abandoned for over 5 years and needed an enormous facelift before Mac Steel could call it home.

The new facility is aptly named Mac City, it is one of the larger projects that SA Office Interiors has been involved in and it took the better part of a year to plan and complete.

The project was a collaborative one, it involved numerous workshopping sessions between the SA Office design team as well as the Mac Steel marketing department. A subtle but timeless design was agreed upon, Mac Steel blue would be the theme, with threads of greys, whites and black. The rebuild was done in the way that it did not detract from the heritage of the building, while still creating a functional and modern interior. Meeting Rooms were build into existing steel I-beams and old face brick was painted a more modern charcoal.

Demolition

The project required a full gutting of the facility in order to create large more functional open plan seating. On closer inspection it became clear that the ceilings as well as the floors would also need to be replaced. All bathrooms and kitchens were completely stripped and were removed from site. This gave the design team a clean slate to begin workshopping the finish schedule.

Look and Feel

The team agreed on a look and feel and the action began as the design and build team began taking delivery of materials. The partitions and ceiling we first to go in. Walls and ceilings were insulated so as to avoid the transfer of noise. The team settled on a mix between a commercial grade carpet tile in the open place, a high end rubber backed tile for the offices and meeting rooms and a commercial grade vinyl plank for the high traffic and canteen areas.

Highlights

The focal points for this project included the reception as well as the staff pause area. The reception walls were broken down to create a open double volume reception area. The team opted to run large 1m x 1m tiles on the floor while using large sheets of marbel on the back of the reception wall. This gave the rooms a sense of space. The reception desk was duco sprayed and covered in a stone top to compliment the marble.
